Using Internet Search Engines

(1) A search engine lets you search the Internet. Click on “Internet Search Engines” on the right hand side of the library webpage http://library.sccsc.edu to get to a list of recommended search engines available on the Internet.

(2) There are several search engines to choose from. Google is good search engine to use.

(3) Unlike the library catalog and databases, search engines do not search by subject, they only appear to do so. You are only searching for words in the text. Because there are so many web pages, this means you need to be very precise when you search.

One way to help limit your search is to use quotations to do a phrase search.  By searching for “job interviewing tips,” Google will only bring up the pages that have that exact phrase in them.

(5) A list of page titles comes up. Even with phrase searching, we still got over 900 hits!

(6) For more information about searching the Internet and how to evaluate websites, use the library research guides and select Internet. There are two guides under this topic, "Introduction to the Internet" and "Web Site Evaluation".
