Cataloging Orientation

 

 

  1. Make sure you get a copy of the Sirsi Cataloging Manual. If you don’t have access to a copy, one can be printed from the Sirsi Client Care Website.
  2. You should get a notebook to keep all the information needed together.
  3. Make sure you read over the SCILS Policies on the SCILS website under “Policies and Standards.” If you are not familiar with cataloging, make sure your look over the General Policies and Standards. Cataloger’s Reference Shelf’s MARC 21 link has a nice overview. Print out all the information needed to do job and add to your notebook.
  4. The next thing to look at is the Sirsi Guide’s on SCILS Only page. A username and password is required. If your coworkers do not know it, contact the SCILS Librarian to get it. The Sirsi guides are instructions written by member’s of the consortium. Print out all the information needed to do job and add to your notebook.
  5. If you are not familiar with Library of Congress call numbers, then go to the New Employee Orientation, there is a section “LC Classification and Shelving.”
  6. If you are going to be doing original Cataloging, the Cataloging Cheat Sheets by J. McRee Elrod which is a link on the New Employee Orientation Webpage under Cataloging.
