Phase I

In 1962, Spartanburg Community College opened its doors (in temporary rented quarters) to students who began training to meet the needs of a new industry.  In September 1963, the first classes met in the brand new Technical Education Center building (now called the East building).  The Library was there at the very beginning.

Library

A technical library is maintained in the administrative area of the Center for the use by faculty and students.  The library contains scientific and technological volumes as well as subject matter materials in related fields and several current periodicals.

The Library was located at the very front left of the Technical Education Center, in area 8 & 7 (storage).

The earliest mention of Library staff (around 1967) included Lois B. George, Librarian, and  Elizabeth A. Brantley, Librarian-Night.   The Library hours ran from 8:00 am to 10:30 pm, Mon.-Thu.; and 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, Friday.

As the numbers of students exploded at SCC over the remaining years of the 60's, the Library, as well as many other areas, soon ran out of room.  It was at this point that the College looked toward adding an additional building on campus.
