Citing an Internet Source

If you're using the information that you find on the Internet in a paper, presentation, or any other type of report, it is very important to cite your source.

Just as there are appropriate methods for citing books, magazines and other databases, there is also an appropriate way to cite a web page.

Citing an Internet source can be tricky because typical information that you might include in your MLA works cited list isn't always provided on Internet sites.

What follows is the MLA format for citing an Internet source.  Begin your citation with the first available info you can find on your website.  Typically on an Internet site, author or webmaster names, along with other publication info, are at the bottom of a web page.

Works Cited

Author’s last name, first name.  “Title of Document.”  Title of Internet Site. Ed. Editor of project. Day Month Year of Source. Name of sponsoring institution. Day Month Year of access <internet address in angled brackets>.

“Japan-A Country Study.”  Federal Research Divisions: Country Studies.  24 Mar. 2003. Library of Congress.  1 July 2003 <http://lcweb2.loc.gov/frd/cs/cshome.html#toc>.

*Note: If the internet address is extremely long, give the address of the site’s main page.
