All Internet use should be consistent with the philosophy, goals, and
objectives of the College as an educational and socially responsible institution within
the community. Priority use in the Library will be activities in support of the academic
curriculum.
The following specific rules of Internet usage apply to faculty, staff, students, and
public access:
Users have a responsibility to be aware of materials that may be objectionable to others when using computer facilities in public areas. Monitors and printers in public areas should not be used to display or print materials that might be defined as harassing or obscene.
The use of Internet software is encouraged and normally uses very little
College resources. However when downloading, particularly during prime business hours, the
load from an Internet user may not be acceptable. Internet users are requested to pay
particular attention to document size before downloading. Copyrighted books, software, or
graphics should not be downloaded unless written permission is granted explicitly.
Software may not be loaded to the Personal Computer Servers or Administrative computer
system without the permission of the Director of Information Technologies. Unapproved
software will be removed by the Technical Support personnel without warning.
The downloading of viruses, "worms", "logic bombs", or similar
destructive agents, is not permitted for any reason including educational interest.
Gaming, including MOO's, MUDS's, and IRC (Internet Relay Chat), is considered non-essential to educational communications. Internet gaming is prohibited in the Library.
Misuse of this resource will cause a user's access to be revoked.
Faculty and staff who abuse the system will be referred to the college disciplinary
policies as outlined in the personnel procedures of the College. Students who abuse the
system will be referred to college disciplinary policies as outlined in The Student Code.
Community patrons who abuse the system will have all library privileges revoked.
Broad areas of abuse include, but is not limited to, criminal activity, personal profit,
harassing or obscene material, and copyright violations. Internet activity is not
necessarily private. All electronic transmissions are identified by a Spartanburg Community College account number and therefore the user is not anonymous. Users of the
Spartanburg Community College system directly and indirectly represent the College and use
should be conducted within these parameters.
To preserve the responsiveness to class and business operations, any
user using a disproportionate amount of resources may be stopped or suspended temporarily
without notification.
