SCC Library Computer Resource Use Policy

The computer resources located in the SCC Library are available to support the goals of the College and to assisting students reach their educational goals.

The following rules of usage apply to faculty, staff, students, community patrons, and public access:

  1. General Use: All computer resources and facilities of Spartanburg Community College, are to be used solely for legitimate and authorized academic, instructional, research, administrative, and public services purposes. Misuse will cause a user's access to be revoked. Faculty and staff who abuse the system will be referred to college disciplinary policies as outlined in the personnel procedures of the College. Students who abuse the system will be referred to college disciplinary policies as outlined in The Student Code. Community patrons who abuse the system will have all library privileges revoked.

    Software: Software provided by Spartanburg Community College can only be used on the computer equipment specified in the software license. A person may not copy or reproduce any licensed software on College computing equipment, except as expressly permitted by the software license.

    Users may not use unauthorized copies of software on College-owned computer or on personal computers housed in College facilities. Unauthorized use of software is regarded as a serious matter and any such use is without the College's consent.

    The Computer Center is responsible for loading, maintaining, and controlling access to the software on the network. The loading of ANY user or departmental software to the network file servers is to be done only with approval and assistance of the Computer Center personnel. Any software found on the network file servers that is not authorized will be immediately removed.

  2. Privacy and Integrity of Individual Accounts: Computer facilities and accounts are owned by the College. All access to central computer systems, including the issuing of passwords, must be approved through Information Technologies and its respective departments. All access to departmental computer systems must be approved by the department head or authorized representative.

    Loopholes in computer system security or knowledge of special passwords is not to be used to damage computer systems or for personal gain. Personal gain is defined as obtaining extra resources from another user, gaining access to systems, or using systems for which proper authorization has not been given.

    Computer accounts are for individual use unless it is a special group account. A user may not attempt to use an account assigned to another person. A person may not give access to their account to others. A user is responsible for all actions taken with their account. Providing false or misleading information for the purpose of obtaining access to computing facilities is prohibited. A person will not attempt to discover another persons password.

    Programs and files are confidential unless they have explicitly been made available to other authorized individuals. Technical Support personnel of Information Technologies may access other files only when necessary for maintenance of system integrity and others user's security.

  3. Personal Responsibility: Users have a responsibility to be aware of materials that may be objectionable to others when using computer facilities. Monitors and printers in public areas should not be used to display or print materials that might be defined as harassing or obscene. Users should not assume that computer use is private.

    Users also have a responsibility to be aware of the limited nature of computer resources in a Library environment. Access may be limited by Library staff at any time without notice.

  4. Because computer resources are limited, non-essential use of computing facilities such as game playing--including MUD's, MOO's, or any other type of interactive or stand alone gaming or the use of computer facilities such as IRC (Internet Relay Chat)--is prohibited in the Library.
